One of the most common gonorrhea tests is the nucleic acid amplification (NAAT) test. Performed on a urine specimen rather than a conventional culture, this test is sensitive and specific and can identify more positive specimens than swabbing.
The NAAT technology involves isolating the DNA of gonorrhea bacteria and then amplifying it through a heating and cooling process. Once this process has been performed, the disease is much easier to detect. Examples of this type of gonorrhea test include polymerase chain reactions (PCRs) and transcription mediated amplifications (TMAs).
A normal result of the test means that no gonorrhea DNA has been found. However, it may be necessary to perform more STD tests to determine the cause of the symptoms.
Gonorrhea Testing results may be affected if you have urinated within two hours of collecting the sample, women have used vaginal creams or sprays within 24 hours of taking the test, or if antibiotics were taken before the test. If any of these apply to you and you are still experiencing symptoms of gonorrhea after a normal test result, it may be necessary to take the test again.
Obtaining a confidential test for Gonorrhea is as simple as contacting our counselors to schedule a test at one of our local testing clinics near you.
